The DStv Ngoma Awards; The best in Zimbabwe advertising

DStv Ngoma AwardsThe best in Zimbabwean advertising during 2014 was honoured at the annual DStv Ngoma Awards, which recognise excellence and innovation in advertising each year.

The luncheon event, held on Saturday April 11 at Harare’s Cresta Lodge, was attended by almost 200 people from the advertising communications industry. The awards competition was sponsored by MultiChoice Zimbabwe, represented at the luncheon by Norman Raisbeck, Gerald Ngonyamo and Liz Dziva.

Jericho Advertising took top honours by winning the Feel Every Moment Award for campaign of the year with their radio-based campaign on in-car safety for Toyota Zimbabwe. This campaign will now automatically go forward into South Africa’s Loerie Awards later in the year, in the regional section of that competition. More than half of the awards presented this year were collected by Shift Engage, a recently-established advertising agency, for various entries for their clients, the first time in many years one single agency has dominated the Ngomas.

Chief judge, Xolisa Dyeshana of South African ad agency Joe Public, praised Zimbabwean agencies for achieving high standards against a background of many challenges. Fellow judges were Rudo Nyangulu, a specialist in digital media, and Saki Mafundikwa, a graphic designer and visual artist.

The awards event was preceded by a workshop for industry professionals, at which Xolisa Dyeshana outlined what constitutes ‘a whole new world’ of advertising with many opportunities for agencies to take their clients to new business levels and add significantly to their bottom lines.

Principal sponsor for this year was MultiChoice Zimbabwe.

Retrospex band entertained guests while Drum Café provided a drumming welcome to guests and also gave drumming
accompaniment to the announcement of winners and runners-up.

DSTV NGOMA AWARDS:Honouring Zimbabwe’s best in advertising

DStv Ngoma AwardsZimbabwe’s advertising communications industry will honour the best advertising in the country during 2014 at the DStv Ngoma Awards, scheduled to be held in Harare in early April.

The Ngoma awards are designed to recognise and reward excellence in advertising communications and have been held each year since 2005. Based on entries from advertising agencies and other individuals and organisations, the awards competition is adjudicated by a panel of local judges and an international judge, and awards are handed out in more than a dozen categories. The overall award for campaign of the year is the most prestigious of the selection and will this year be named the Feel Every Moment Award, as a result of continued support from MultiChoice Zimbabwe, which is also this year’s title sponsor.

“We are delighted with the support from MultiChoice, as well as from our other sponsors, and this has enabled the competition to be run for 10th year, with a record number of entries from a large number of entrant organisations,” said Judy Macdonald, a member of the organising team.

The deadline for entries at the end of January saw almost 320 entries in the various categories. Judging is now taking place and the awards presentation will take place at a glittering luncheon on Saturday April 11, an event open to anyone interested or involved in advertising, marketing, sales and public relations, as well as from the media.

“We are hoping for a good turnout of industry professionals this year, especially from among the sales and marketing managers who control the advertising decision-making within corporates. They have not attended in the numbers they should in recent years, and we feel it is important for them to see what is happening within the advertising communications industry and be part of the process of change and development,” said Ms Macdonald.
